Winemaker’s Dinner with Raats Family Wines
On Tuesday, March 17, Griffins’ invites guests to a Winemaker’s Dinner together with Raats Family Wines, one of South Africa’s most respected family-owned wine producers. Throughout the evening, a specially composed menu will be served, with each course paired with selected wines from the producer – an opportunity to discover how food and wine elevate one another when perfectly matched.
Raats Family Wines was founded in the early 2000s by winemaker Bruwer Raats, who, after years of working in the wine world around the globe, returned to the Cape with a clear vision: to craft terroir-driven wines of exceptional quality. The focus lies particularly on two grape varieties – Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc – grapes that were long underestimated in South Africa but which Raats has helped elevate to an international level. Today, the winery is run together with the family, where cousin Gavin Bruwer has played a central role in winemaking and viticulture.
The grapes are primarily grown in Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, an area with granite- and sandstone-rich soils that give the wines their distinctive minerality and freshness. The family follows a strong philosophy of sustainable farming, aiming to let the terroir speak through the wine rather than manipulating it in the cellar.
During the evening at Griffins’, guests will enjoy a menu featuring grilled red prawns with chili, garlic and parsley, followed by veal skewers with chimichurri, lemon cream and grilled gem lettuce, before the evening culminates in a grilled tomahawk served with bordelaise sauce, potato gratin and zucchini salad. The dinner concludes with chocolate truffles and coffee.
The dishes will be paired with several wines from the producer, giving guests the chance to taste everything from Original Chenin Blanc and Old Vine Chenin Blanc to Dolomite Cabernet Franc, Jasper Red Blend, Family Reserve Cabernet Franc and the iconic MR de Compostella.
